What was the Renaissance?

During the Harlem Renaissance, Aaron and Alta Douglas's Harlem apartment was one of the primary gathering spots for artists, writers, and poets. When asked, What was the Renaissance to you? Douglas replied, "It was a cultural experience. A sort of spiritual experience. It wasn't something people actually understood as really a thing of great importance; they had the feeling that something was going on. We acknowledged that this perhaps was something unique ....that touched upon the experience of black people in America. It was only later that you had the feeling that here was something of importance to us and something that had the possibility of being a base for greater development in the future."
